Order sod for the day you intend to lay it. It is a living product that heats up on the pallet and can be dead within 48 hours in warm weather, so a delivery that waits for the weekend is a delivery you pay for twice.

The ground needs preparing before the sod arrives — cleared, levelled, and ideally with a starter fertiliser worked in. That work cannot happen after the pallet is on the drive.

Water deeply and immediately after laying, then keep it damp for the first two weeks. Sod that dries out at the seams shrinks and leaves permanent gaps.

Area times the waste allowance, divided by the coverage of one roll, rounded up. Pallets follow at roughly 450 square feet each, which is the common figure though it varies by supplier and sod type.

The waste allowance is lower than for most materials because sod is cut with a knife to fit any shape, and the offcuts from one edge often fill a gap elsewhere. Five to ten per cent covers curved beds and awkward corners.

What the arithmetic cannot tell you is that sod is perishable. It is harvested, rolled and stacked, and it begins heating on the pallet immediately — which is why the delivery and installation have to happen together.

  1. Step 1: Measure the lawn

    Length and width of the area to be turfed. For irregular shapes, break it into rectangles and add the areas.

  2. Step 2: Check the roll coverage

    Ask the supplier what one slab or roll covers. Standard slabs are around 10 square feet; big rolls can be 50 or more.

  3. Step 3: Prepare the ground first

    Clear, level and rake the soil before the delivery arrives. This work cannot happen with a pallet of sod waiting on the drive.

  4. Step 4: Order for the day you lay it

    Book the delivery for the morning you intend to install, not for whenever is convenient.

A small front lawn
A 20 by 15 area is 300 square feet, 324 with waste, or 33 rolls — under a pallet, and often available for collection rather than delivery.
A lawn with curved beds
Curves waste more than rectangles. Measure the containing rectangle and keep the 8% allowance rather than trying to subtract the bed shapes — the offcuts around a curve are rarely reusable.
