Siding Cost Calculator
What re-siding a house costs, including trim and removal.
One square is 100 sq ft. Use the siding calculator to work it out.
$300–600 per square depending on material and complexity.
Corner posts, J-channel and window trim, priced by the linear foot in practice.
1.00 is the national average. Best set by dividing a real local quote by this calculator's midpoint.
Sheathing rot behind old siding is the classic discovery.

This is a budgeting figure, not a quote. Regional labor rates vary by a factor of two or more across the country, and the same job priced in a busy season and a quiet one can differ by a third. Get three local quotes before committing to anything.
The range matters more than the midpoint. Construction estimating works to roughly ±25% until a scope is drawn and priced, and a single confident number would be pretending to a precision that does not exist at this stage.
Labor is usually the larger half and the more variable half. If the figure looks wrong, the labor rate is almost always the input to revisit first — material prices are far more consistent between regions than crews are.
Priced by the square, the same hundred-square-foot unit as roofing. Trim is a separate fixed line because on a house with many windows it can rival the siding itself in cost.
Why use this tool?
Four material tiers
Vinyl through cedar and metal, spanning more than three to one.
House wrap included
Weather barrier and flashing — the layer that makes the siding work.
Trim as its own line
Corner posts, J-channel and window trim, which scale with openings rather than area.
Sheathing rot flagged
The classic discovery once old siding comes off.
How this siding cost calculator works
Material, house wrap and labor are rated per square of wall area. Use the siding calculator to get that figure from perimeter, height and gables.
Trim is entered as a fixed amount because it scales with the number of openings and corners rather than with wall area. A simple box with four windows needs far less than a house of the same area with twelve.
Removal is per square of existing siding. It is straightforward on vinyl and considerably more involved on anything nailed through to sheathing.
How to use it
Step 1: Work out the wall area
In squares. The siding calculator handles gables and openings.
Step 2: Pick a material
This drives the total more than anything else.
Step 3: Estimate the trim
Count corners and openings — it is priced by the linear foot in practice.
Step 4: Keep the contingency
Rotten sheathing behind old siding is common and unbudgeted.
Example usage
- A 22 square house in engineered wood
- $9,130 material and wrap, $9,350 labor, $1,800 trim, $1,980 removal — about $24,931 midpoint, ranging $18,698 to $31,164. Roughly $1,133 per square.
- Vinyl instead
- Dropping the material rate to $250 takes the midpoint to about $22,466. Vinyl saves less than people expect because labor dominates.
- Fibre cement
- At $550 per square the same house runs about $29,860 — heavier material, more labor, and a longer life.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to side a house?
Commonly $15,000 to $30,000 for an average house, depending heavily on material and how much trim the elevations need.
What is a square of siding?
One hundred square feet of wall coverage — the same unit roofing uses. Materials and labor are both quoted against it.
Is vinyl much cheaper than fibre cement?
On material, substantially. On the installed total, less than you would expect, because labor is roughly half the job and fibre cement only adds somewhat to it.
Does trim really cost that much?
On a house with many windows, yes. Corner posts, J-channel and window trim are priced by the linear foot and can approach the siding cost on a complex elevation.
What is found behind old siding?
Frequently rotten sheathing or missing weather barrier, particularly around windows. Budget for it — it is discovered rather than predicted.
