Every angle has two names

A cut can be described as the angle from the face or the angle from square, and those are complements of each other. A mitre saw reads off square — a square crosscut is zero — while a protractor against the workpiece reads from the face. At 45 degrees the two coincide, which is why square corners feel intuitive and nothing else does.

At an octagon corner the difference is stark: the cut is 67.5 degrees from the face and 22.5 on the saw scale. Enter one where the other belongs and the piece is scrap. Every result here states which convention it is using and gives the other alongside.

Compound cuts cannot be reasoned to

Tilting a piece changes the mitre it needs as well as introducing a bevel, so a compound cut cannot be worked out by adjusting a flat mitre until it looks right. The two settings are coupled through the geometry and have to be solved together.

That is why crown moulding has charts and why the charts only cover square corners. Once the wall is not 90 degrees, or the spring angle is not one of the two common ones, the chart runs out — and the arithmetic underneath is not something anyone does on a ladder.

Small errors accumulate

A tenth of a degree is invisible on one joint. Around a twelve-segment ring it is more than a degree of total error, and the last joint will not close. The same applies to measuring each piece from the previous cut rather than from a stop block, where one kerf of error compounds per piece.

The practical answer is always to dry-assemble the whole thing before committing. A single test joint tells you almost nothing about whether a segmented ring will close.

What is the miter angle for an octagon?

22.5 degrees on the saw scale, which is a 67.5 degree cut measured from the face. The shortcut is 180 divided by the number of sides.

Why does my saw scale not match my calculated angle?

Saws measure off square rather than from the face, so the scale shows 90 less the cut angle. Every result here gives both figures for that reason.

Why will my segmented ring not close?

Cumulative error. Each joint contributes a fraction of a degree and they add around the ring, so a setting that looks perfect on one test joint can leave a visible gap by the last.
