This assumes the drawing is printed at its stated scale. A sheet reduced to fit a smaller printer is no longer at scale, and measuring it produces confident nonsense — check the printed scale bar before trusting any measurement taken off paper.

Written dimensions always beat scaled ones. Drawings carry the note 'do not scale' precisely because paper stretches, printers rescale and a measured figure has no tolerance information attached to it.

How this drawing scale converter works

Every scale reduces to a plain ratio — a quarter inch to the foot is 1:48, because a foot is forty-eight quarter-inches. Multiplying the measured length by that ratio gives the real one.

Architectural scales express a fraction of an inch to the foot; engineering scales express one inch to some number of feet. Both are ratios once the units are stripped out, which is why the selector shows both forms.

The result is converted back to feet and inches because that is how drawings are dimensioned, with decimal inches and metres alongside for anything that needs them.

  1. Step 1: Check the printed scale

    Look for a scale bar on the sheet and verify it measures what it claims before trusting anything.

  2. Step 2: Measure on the paper

    In inches, as carefully as the line weight allows.

  3. Step 3: Select the scale

    From the drawing's title block.

  4. Step 4: Prefer written dimensions

    If the drawing carries a figure, use it. Scaling is for what is not dimensioned.

A quarter-inch plan
3.5 in measured at 1/4 in = 1 ft is 168 in — 14 ft 0 in.
An eighth-inch site plan
The same 3.5 in at 1/8 in = 1 ft is 336 in — 28 ft. Halving the scale doubles what each measured inch represents.
An engineering scale
3.5 in at 1 in = 20 ft is 840 in, or 70 ft. Engineering scales cover far more ground per inch of paper.

What ratio is 1/4 inch scale?

1:48. A foot contains forty-eight quarter-inches, so every quarter inch on the drawing is a foot in reality.

How do I convert a measurement from a blueprint?

Multiply what you measured by the scale ratio. Three and a half inches at 1/4 in = 1 ft is 3.5 × 48 = 168 inches, or 14 feet.

Why do drawings say 'do not scale'?

Because paper stretches, printers rescale, and a measured figure carries no tolerance information. Written dimensions are the authority; scaling is for anything not dimensioned.

My printed drawing does not measure right — why?

Almost certainly it was reduced to fit the paper. Check the scale bar on the sheet: if it does not measure its stated length, nothing else on the drawing will either.
